My Ami jan used to say: “Daal maash ainj banani My Ami jan used to say:
“Daal maash ainj banani k ek ek daal di giri alag dikhay.”
(Every single grain should be separate and visible.)

I didn’t truly understand it… until I started cooking myself.
And then, after she passed, it all made sense — her voice guiding me in the kitchen every single time 🤍

Today I’m sharing her simple daal maash recipe — the way she taught me.

Ingredients & Steps:
• 1 cup daal maash (soaked overnight or during the day)
• 2 small onions, finely sliced
• Salt to taste
• 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste (fresh preferred)
• 2 tomatoes

Spices:
• 1 tsp cumin (ground)
• ½ tsp haldi
• 1 tsp coriander powder
• Red chilli to taste
Method:
• Fry onions until golden brown
• Add salt + ginger garlic paste, cook for ~5 minutes
• Add tomatoes and bhunofy until they soften and release oil
• Add spices and cook until smooth (blend if you prefer)
• Add soaked daal and bhunofy well until oil separates
• Slowly add hot water (½ cup at a time), cook on low heat
• Do not cover — this is key
• Keep adding water gradually until the daal is cooked but each grain stays separate (not mushy)

Finish with:
• Green chillies
• Fresh dhaniya
• A sprinkle of roasted zeera + coriander powder
Serve with garam roti and a little makhan on top
Because sometimes recipes aren’t just recipes — they’re grief, love, and healing… all served on the same plate.
Been reciting durood to them since they were born… to calm them when crying… bed time ! And then they started reciting after me and then all by themselves ❤️Alhamdulillah
